The journey lasted 236 days. On the morning of 3 November, with an American flag flying on a pole, Stanley led his remaining fifty-four men down a mountain toward a lake and his historic meeting with Dr. Livingstone.

Whatever happened to the Henry rifle no one officially knows. That 1860 Henry Stanley tore out the pages of this encounter in his diary, and even Livingstone’s account of their meeting does not mention the phrase. The words are famous because of their tongue-in-cheek humour: Dr Livingstone was the only white person for hundreds of miles.

Ron Hollander article describes trip into African interior to where Henry Stanley encountered Dr David Livingstone, 1871; illus; map (M) In my drawing room wall I have a huge map of a portion of Central Africa from the surveys, drawings and observations of Dr David Livingstone between the years 1866 and 1873 engraved by the Royal Geographical Society.The map is incomplete as in the middle of the exploration Dr. Livingstone was struck by malaria which halted his travel.David Stanley was to undertake a search for the Scottish missionary and explorer, Dr. Livingstone, who at that time had been missing in East Africa for three years. David Livingstone (1813-73) was a Scottish missionary and medical doctor who explored much of the interior of Africa. In a remarkable journey in 1853-56, he became the first European to cross the African continent. Starting on the Zambezi River, he traveled north and west across Angola to reach the Atlantic at Luanda. On his return journey he followed the Zambezi to its mouth on the Indian Stanley picked up a few supplies and then marched out into the Congo to find Dr. Livingstone and hurt as many ethnic groups as he could along the way.
